Special effects lens filters - This is a Cokin diffusion filter used to create an impressionistic effect.

Posterization. This converts an image into a chosen number of colors. Here an eland image is rendered in seven colors. All of the inbetween gradations of tone are eliminated.

Texturization. This creates a 3D surface effect that can make a picture look like it is printed on texturized paper or canvas. In this example this was done digitally using Photoshop filters. An even more dramatic effect is to print on various textures of media.

Color to black and white conversion, antiquing, sepia toning, etc. Color transparencies convert to excellent black and white images in most imaging software. The biggest drawback is you cannot regain all of the latitude that would be available in a black and white negative film. Of course black and white negatives can be imaged digitally and still have great control of the range of tones in the image.

Here a photo which has not been digitally manipulated is simply overlapped or layered on copies of itself. Photoshop effects were applied to the edges to provide some separation with an edge glow and a drop shadow.
